Can You Really Have Your Cake And Eat It Too?
An overwhelming YES!My favorite examples to give are rich people. It is a common belief that becoming massively wealthy is a lot of hard work. But guess what? It is only hard work if you want it to be!
Most rich people that we are exposed to are people that we see on television or in newspapers. They are the famous ones. But did you know that there are multi-millionaires who dont do anything? Sure, most of them took the time to set up a system to generate wealth, but after that, they do nothing. They just get their checks out of the mailbox and go on their merry way (and with direct deposit, they dont usually even need to go to the mailbox anymore). The people we see on television are on television because they work hard for their money. But the reason these lazy rich, though I would prefer to call them the smart rich, are not on television is because what they do is incredibly boring to watch. Most people dont want to see rich people driving around the golf course all day long. Most people want to see action and drama. They want to see frantic business deals with people pounding on their desks or waving their arms around or watching a boss yell Youre fired. Its entertaining, sure, but is that really what productivity is all about?
And most of the popular get rich authors are popular for that same reason. People want to believe that getting rich has to take an extreme amount of work. So, theyll be naturally attracted to things that make them think that it is hard to make money. But now you tell me, wouldnt you really rather be the person walking around on the golf course or shopping all day long than being someone who works hard for their money?
Think this is not true? Well, take an example on a smaller scale. When we are children, most of us thought that riding our bicycles would be difficult. And for many of us it was. But did you know that there are kids who just jump on and it is not that big of a deal for them? Did you realize that when you were a kid? I didnt. And after we learned to ride the bike, did we still kick the tires or curse our pedals and threaten to send it to the scrap heap before we climbed on again? Of course not. So why are people still getting in arguments over their jobs and pounding their desks? Its entertaining. But it is certainly not productive.
Stop looking for ways to find work as being hard and dramatic and start looking for ways to work smart. Do that, and youll join that quiet little club of rich people who dont work for a living, but play for a living.
